As libraries evolve to better serve today’s communities, many are embracing design strategies and programming ideas that look surprisingly familiar to those in the children’s museum world. In this session, Senior Exhibit Developer, Trevor Cunnien from Luci explores how libraries can borrow from the best of children’s museum practices—creating playful, immersive, and developmentally rich spaces that engage young visitors and their caregivers alike.

Drawing from his work designing literacy-rich playspaces for public libraries, Trevor will share practical insights on how libraries can incorporate play-based learning, hands-on experiences, and age-inclusive environments to foster curiosity, creativity, and community connection. Attendees will walk away with inspiration, design ideas, and actionable takeaways for reimagining the role of children’s spaces within their own libraries.

Trevor Cunnien is a writer, designer, and Senior Exhibit Developer at Luci. He supports the creative team by shaping content and messaging that is accessible, engaging, and educational—particularly during the early stages of project development. Trevor’s natural curiosity, thorough research methods, and conversational communication style allow him to quickly become a subject-matter expert and collaborate effectively with teammates and clients alike. He has worked on children’s playspaces and exhibitions for Streets of Southpoint in Durham, NC, Spokane Public Libraries, Santa Clara County Libraries, and the Children’s Discovery Museum in Normal, IL.
