The SWON Children's Literature Conference is a full-day regional event for library staff, educators, and anyone else who works with children or children’s literature. This event combines the 30-year tradition of Picture Book Read-In with the structured session format of the OKI Children’s Literature Conference.

The morning will consist of conference sessions designed to provide attendees with the latest information, resources, and best practices in children's literature and library services. There will be a variety of break out sessions to choose from, covering a range of topics such as:

  • Children's literature selection and collection development
  • Storytime and programming ideas
  • Early literacy and childhood education

The entire afternoon will be dedicated to the 30th annual SWON Picture Book Read-In, a chance to binge read hundreds of picture books and discuss them with your colleagues.

The conference will also provide attendees with the chance to meet and learn from prominent children's authors and other industry professionals.

Keynote Speaker:

Tadgh Bentley is an author, illustrator, and artist currently living in South-East Ohio. Originally from the UK, Tadgh is a self-taught artist whose publishing career began in 2012 with the release of his first picture book, ‘Little Penguin Gets the Hiccups’. He currently has ten books for children published with HarperCollins, Scholastic, and Penguin, the most recent being, ‘One Chicken Nugget’, released in 2023. Tadgh is a former middle and elementary school teacher and retains a passion for education. In recent years he has been working with traditional paint in the form of landscape painting, finding inspiration in the woods around his home.

Featured Session Speakers:

Judy Carey Nevin spent some of the best years of her career as an editor at Viking Children’s Books, specializing in picture books and easy-to-read titles. She loved helping bring books into the world and is deeply proud of the ones she has authored herself. She currently works as a library manager in Ohio, where she lives with her nerdy professor husband and their brilliant daughter.

Carol Williams brings a lifelong love of storytelling and a professional writing background in marketing and communications to her debut middle grade novel, The Supernatural Files of CJ Delaney. With years of experience crafting clear, compelling messages for a wide range of audiences, Carol now turns her focus to young readers—and offers a fast-paced, emotionally rich fantasy with a touch of mystery and a lot of heart. Carol is passionate about supporting literacy, encouraging curiosity, and helping young readers discover the joy of a well-told story. She lives in Ohio with her husband and a very large bookshelf.
